Ghadames, The ancient desert oasis town of Ghadames is internationally
known for its peace and tranquility. Ghadames is visited by many tourists and it
is a must for any visitor to the great Libyan Sahara desert. Tiny streets, mud
brick architecture houses, the old town and the colorful hand woven rugs are the
most interesting highlights of this desert oasis. Situated in the outskirts of
Sahara, Ghadames is an ancient caravaning center. The city is still living
between traditional and contemporary architecture. Ghadames is located by one of
the most important trade routes, concerning central Africa with the
Mediterranean Sea Cost.

Acacus Mountains, the Acacus, at Acacus Mountains . the heart of the
Libyan Sahara desert, on the border to Algeria, is a place of extraordinary
natural beauty. The Acacus Mountains with their Sandstone rocks is one of
Libya's remarkable natural historical sites and open-air museum in itself. It
also represents an invaluable register of the environmental, cultural and
spiritual changes which have taken place over many the millennia. Erosion has
played its part throughout these thousands of years, but the mountains still
rise across
a magnificent landscape. Many Neolithic cave painting representing
animal life that was once abundant in
Sahars and drawings that extends more than ten thousand years can still be found
in the area. These mountains are home to the
tribes of Tuareg
Wadi Matkendouch, The Valley of Matkendouch is an open air gallery of
arts that nature has preserved miraculously all these years. Unlike the findings
in the Acacus Mountains, the neolith art of engravings in these rocks are the
predominant features of the art gallery. Rocks are engraved with mammals that
once lived in the
area around 8000 BC.
Ancient City of Jerma & Museum, The ancient City of Jerma is built around
1st century AD. Ancient Jerma is one of the most important archaeological sites
in all of Libya. The Garamantian Civilization at 900 BC to 500 AD was the
dominate culture of the region and ancient Jerma was the capital.
Lakes and Dunes in the Desert, This platform of desert dunes, oasis, and
lakes is the most natural beauty of all times. Situated on
the south eastern side of the Ubari Sand Sea (Dawada Sand), it is the home of
the great lakes in the middle of the desert. The lakes
are surrounded by sand
dunes and palms trees, which reflect the pure natural colors of the Rainbow. The
lakes are: Lake Mafu - its water changes from red to blue to green. Lake
Qabaroun - which has marine water more salty than the Dead Sea (which reflects
the historical background that this entire desert was once a very big sea). Lake
Mandara - which its restful. Lake of Um Alma - The Mother of water, with its
narrow shape among the dunes.

Waw al Namous Volcano, Few destinations of Libya demand more traveling
than Waw al Namous, but
when you get here you are practically in the very centre of
the Sahara desert.
And when you are in the centre of Sahara what would be better than to come
across a crater lake? It is quite a drive south into the pure desert from the
village of Waw Kabir, before ascending the mountain of Waw al Namous, which is
an extinct volcano. The landscape you find here looks almost like the moon. The
ancient volcano has several superbly set lakes in its crater and a full day can
be spent here walking up the volcano and swimming in the lakes - but bring a
mosquito repellant.
