Home .. About Libya

Libya is situated at the central north of Africa, between 90 50’E Longitude and 180’N-330 N latitude. In the north is the Mediterranean Sea coastline of about 1900 km in length. It is surrounded by Algeria and Tunisia to the west, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south. It has an area of about 1.778,500 sq.km. which makes it the fourth largest country in Africa and it is mostly desert. After decades of isolation, Libya has only just arrived on the travellers' map, and there’s plenty to see. Along the dramatic Mediterranean coast there are the incredibly well-preserved Roman remains of Sabratha and Leptis Magna. Between these lies Tripoli the capital of Libya with its atmospheric Medina - old town. Deep into the Sahara Desert, from Sebha, in the middle of the Sahara, we visit Jerma, capital of the ancient Garamantian Empire, and Ghat the City of Tuareg, on the edge of the Acacus Mountains, the Open-air Museum. You will have the chance to visit one of the finest collections of rock art on earth. The bizarre landscapes and rock formations show us the way to the paintings and engravings of Wadi Anshal, Tanshal, Tashwint, Awiss and Adud. Here the mountain scenery is as good as can be found everywhere in the entire Sahara, but an equal attraction is the rock art, dating from as long as 8000 BC. We continue our desert adventures by 4WD, exploring beautiful Wadi Matkendouch, an Open-air Museum of the most beautiful rock paintings in the whole Libyan Desert, where we find 10,000-year-old engravings of elephants and giraffes that once roamed here.

We also explore the vast Ubari Sand Sea (Great Sand Sea), camping by exquisite natural lakes (Gabaraun, Mafu, Mandara and Um Alma) fringed by date palms and surrounded by dunes. The Caravan town of Ghadames, the 'Pearl of the Sahara', is well worth a visit. For a classic Sahara desert experience, we spend some days in the desert driving with 4WD cars, exploring this vast landscape.
